Sports Day Preperation

On Thursday 13th July, Red Rose pupils had a morning preparing for 'Sports Day'. This involved trying out the events: a sprint; a skipping race; a long-distance race; a relay; a bean bag race and an obstacle race. Everyone had a good time and thoroughly enjoyed it.

"It was really exciting to practice for all of the fun races and events,"
                                                                                                 A year 6 pupil.

"The 'Sports Day' practice was great and it is good to know what I will be doing,"
                                                                                                                   A year 4 pupil.

"It was tiring but fun. Now I know what I'm doing tomorrow,"
                                                                                    A year 5 pupil.

Residential For the YR6's.

After SATs YR6's go on their Residential. This year Year 6 going to Ford Castle,in Berwick. Here are some quotes from people who are going on the Residential:

"I think it will be fun and exciting" From a Year 6 Pupil,

"The activity's will be fun" Said 2 Pupils from Year 6.

Year 6 will be staying for 2 nights and 3 days,Year 6 will be doing multiple activities through there visit.

After the week, the group agreed that it had been a brilliant 3 days - more details to come!

SATs

From the 8th to the 11th of May, SATs 'week' took place for the year 2 and 6 pupils. During this time, numerous tests were issued on subjects like: maths, reading, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

'SATs' means 'Standard Assessment Tasks' and they are issued by the government to check the levels of pupils at the end of KS1 (key stage 1) and KS2 (key stage 2).

Red Rose had prepared for these tests since the start of the year and everything in them is linked to what children are supposed to have learned throughout school.

"It was surprisingly easy compared to the work that we had done to prepare for it,"
                                                                                                               A year 6 pupil
Just waiting for the results now.

Year 6 leavers assembly.

On the 7th of July 2017,the year 6s’ presented their Leavers Assembly to the school. The year 6s worked very hard and practised every day. On Thursday (the day before the assembly) some year 3, 4, and 5 pupils (who were going to Quad Kids on Friday)had a sneak preview for the dress rehearsal. During the assembly, the year 6s sang some songs such as: When We Were Young (that brought a few tears to the audience’s eyes); Wanna Be Like You and When I Grow up (from Matilda) they also.

The year sixes wrote their scripts over a few weeks, practised the dance - Bollywood Style -  and sang the songs and then during one busy week practised in the hall. They worked hard to make everyone smile - and maybe have a few tears. Mr Ross and Mrs Hodgson had helped them plan the Leavers’ assembly but most of it was scripted by the year 6 pupils. All of the staff have given the year 6s a good time at Red Rose and have made sure they have had a good education. The year 6s have had a great time planning the family assembly and performing it to.

What a great time the class had performing for the school and their relatives. After the excitement had died down, every Year 6 pupil was presented with a dictionary ( for friends and staff to sign)and a leavers T-shirt - a fitting way to say well done to the Year 6 pupils, who will leave us soon. On the last day of term the Year 6s will walk around school getting their jumpers signed! Year 6 is sad to leave but I think they are ready to move on, they will never forget Red Rose.

Spring into Summer - Caterpillar into Butterfly

In the Sunshine class, we have been spending the last few weeks observing our caterpillars grow bigger, and change into a chrysalis. On Monday, the children were amazed to see that a butterfly had emerged from its chrysalis - that’s when the magic began.

At the beginning of the week, we could see all our butterflies in their special butterfly garden nets. The children continued to care for them and observe them throughout the week – what a good job they did too! When the children realised how strong the butterflies were becoming, we knew it was time to set them free. The children had mixed emotions about setting their butterflies free but knew it was for the best. The children watched as some of the butterflies quickly fluttered away; others stayed a little longer to give the children a last goodbye.

Green Tree Award

Mrs Sweet, our reception teacher, was pleased to learn this week that our school achieved the Green Tree Bronze Level Award with the Woodland Trust. We have gained this for our outdoor learning curriculum and the work we undertake teaching our children about the woods, trees and wildlife.

There are a variety of hands-on, educational activities that can be undertaken to achieve the award, that is designed to encourage children to explore the natural world around them. One activity was a tree planting event which was attended by many parents. Our next target to aim for is Silver Level.

Easter Assembly

We welcomed Mrs White (Susan) into our school today. She came and talked about what Easter is about. Susan used a chocolate egg and said that, although a chocolate egg is nice, it is hollow inside - whereas, Christians believe, that Jesus is full of love, kindness and sharing.

Susan is working at the Church of St Mary and St Cuthbert, where we have our nativity and harvest services.

Reception Rocket

The pupils in Reception have been allowed to borrow a pneumatic toy rocket (a rocket powered by gases) to experiment with in the outdoor classroom. They enjoyed counting down as one person at a time from their class tried pressing the pedal to power it.

" It was really fun. Everyone got a go, "
                                           A reception pupil.

Comic Relief

On the 24th March it is Comic Relief day also known as Red Nose Day.

Some people from Yr 5,Yr 6 and  Yr 3 offered to help raise money for Comic Relief by preforming for the whole school. There was a lot of different acts; singing, dancing, drumming, playing the piano, telling jokes and a lot more!

We also had a non-uniform day to hep raise money.

Red Nose Day, or Comic Relief Day, helps children in the UK and Africa. We saw a video about a boy called Hassan, who had lost his mother to the tragic Ebola virus. Money that was raised by Comic Relief has helped to send Hassan to school where he can be educated and develop his life. He would also get hot meals and proper school uniform - Comic Relief has changed his life.

Make your laugh matter.;

1000 Cranes, well nearly 1000 and swans.

Discovery News
This afternoon, we made some origami swans. These are similar to the cranes that a girl called Sadako Sasaki made whilst she was ill following the atomic bomb drop on Hiroshima. Aged 2, Sadako was diagnosed with Leukaemia which made her ill. Sadly, at the age of 11 she died, but not after trying to make 1000 cranes from paper. There is a Japanese legend that says that if you make 1000 cranes then you will be granted 1 wish. We have made 78 swans (easier to make than cranes). They have become a symbol of peace between people. It was interesting to learn about Sadako and discuss whether she was a real symbol of world peace.

What is school life like?

Wednesday 25th January 2017

Today, (in literacy) we wrote a 'Ship's Log', which was connected to our class book 'Kensuke's Kingdom'. We have recently been planning which events from the book we were going to put into it : such as going to Australia and the canaries.

"It was really good and I liked how it was set out."
                                                                   Eve- about literacy.

In maths we are learning how to convert metric to imperial lengths, masses and volumes - such as feet into metres and kilograms to pounds.

"Maths has been really good and we have learn't about converting between metric and imperial units- which is very useful to learn for every day life."
                                                      Priya- about Numeracy.

In the afternoon, (in science) we learned about 'the Law of Reflection' and did an experiment in the dark to test it. When we learned about it, we also had to learn about the 'Normal line' and the lines of incidence and reflection.

"Science is really good because you get to do lots of experiments. When you are doing it you understand what is being said clearly. Also, I really enjoy learning about our experiments."
                                                                                                                            Courtney- about Science.

Beat the streets

On 15th of March, a person from Beat the streets (BTS) came into our school and gave us a special assembly. BTS' goal is to get more people outside, so that you can walk, cycle, scooter or run. Everyone is invited! Some schools around Chester-Le-Street have been chosen to participate in this event. Our school can receive up to £400 in Decathlon vouchers! You will get a card and a little key-ring to get points. Beat boxes are placed all around Chester-Le-Street. Try and find as many as you can!

All you have to do is tap - a light will flash on the box and make a noise. To get 10 points you have to go to two boxes. - you can't do it two times at one box! If they find you cheating you will get disqualified and loose all of your points.
You can go on the website and check out how many points you have: https://www.beatthestreet.me/chesterlestreet

You can win prizes such as: Highlighter, water bottle, hedgehog and a bag! Your prizes will be delivered to your school and given to you by your teacher. This event starts on 29 March  and ends on the 17 May 2017. Good luck!

Police Dogs

On Tuesday 28th February, a police 'handler' came into Red Rose with her two Labradors (Jet and Ben). The last time the Labradors came was roughly four years ago -which is why the police came in to talk about
saying no to strangers. We learned about what to do if a stranger offered you something or tried to take you into their car. We learned about how the internet can be both dangerous and fun. If you want to listen to a song that they used, please click on the following link: www.jetandben.co.uk/jetandben_song.html .

We have exciting news!
One of our governors (Mr Downs) has been helping the School Council to design some marvelous new logo for our school. Several designs have been shown round the school and the classes had to tell the School Council their views.

A busy day at Redrose

Today we had an activity filled day, with loads of fun all around. This Morning the year six and year five and went to a Maths Competition at Hermitage. Also Mrs Bainbridge served her brand new Intergalactical Custard from another galaxy. It was blue!

(It tasted lovely though!)

Year 5 and 6 Japanese art with Pippa Bell

On Thursday the 9th of February, Pippa Bell came into NASA and Discovery class to show the children Japanese art. This was part of two exciting days across the school with children learning about Japanese, Egyptian and polar art - what a great knowledge Pippa had and she loves talking about the art. It left the children and staff looking at art in a different way. She explained the different types of Japanese art - anime, wood block, Shodo and manga plus loads more. She also showed us some famous Japanese including the Great wave by Hokusai.  The children clearly enjoyed it as they listened so well and answered her questions. It was such an exciting morning for everybody and the children are so excited to start their own Japanese art using the types Pippa has shown us.                                               Thank you!

Yr 5 and 6 Hermitage Maths Challenge

On Wednesday 7th 2017,  two teams (one from year five and one from year six) went to the Hermitage to participate in a 'Maths Challenge'. The teams had previously been told that they needed to prepare items for a poster on René Descartes, a famous mathematician, philosopher and scientist from the 16th century.

When the teams got there, they had to complete various challenging maths tasks, relay rounds, puzzles and games as well as having the original poster competition. The material that had been researched had to be organised onto an A2 sheet of paper. Every round had a maximum amount of points which could be awarded to the teams and all of the points were added together to find an overall winner of the competition. Red Rose's year five team came 5th and the year six team came 1st. With this good position, the year 6 team will be going to the final later in the year.

They all enjoyed the day.

"It was fun and very challenging."
                                       A year 6 pupil.

Swimming Gala

On Wednesday 8th February 2017, the Red Rose swimming team went to the Freeman Quays swimming pool in Durham to compete against other schools in the district. They didn't think they would come in the top 3, so they hadn't picked anyone to collect the certificate.

Surprisingly, they came 2nd! Someone had to be chosen rapidly to be presented with the runner up certificate.

Well done to the swimmers!

Take off to the Stars

The 'Red Rose Rocket' was recently re-designed (by the art club), since the previous rocket is not very sturdy after three years of heavy use. Our rocket is used for 'Stars in the Rocket', which are one of our ways of awarding students. They can be awarded by teachers or the headteacher during our Friday award assembly, and go towards a trip to Krazy Kingdom for the group (or planet) which has the most stars at the end of the term.

"The new rocket is good and creative. It fits the theme of our school well."
                                                                                                                      A year 6 student

Soon, our new rocket will be in use for our Friday award assembly.

On the 5th and 6th of January, Galaxy,Armstrong and Apollo (Years 3 and 4) went on an educational visit to the Oriental museum. Their topic this term is the Egyptians. On the first day of the visit, Year 3 got on the bus to head off. On the second day of the visits, Year 4 went on their educational visit. They learned all the facts they needed. It was very educational. Everyone really enjoyed the trip. It took the children on a journey around the ages of Ancient Egypt. They saw exhibits of hieroglyphics, mummies, extracts of pottery and Egyptian art. They learned about pharaohs, the sphinx and lots more.

A student said, “The trip was educational and very interesting,”

Northern Gas Networks Assembly

Today, 4th January 2017, a worker from the Northern Gas Networks came in to take an assembly on gas and how to stay safe when you are near the repair site on the street outside school (on Durham Road). NGN are replacing the old metal piping - that supplies the gas at the moment - with new plastic piping that can't rust and lasts for 70 to 100 years. This process will happen over the next 3-4 weeks. The worker who came in told us to remember the ' play safe - stay safe ' rule, when around work sites such as the one she is currently working at.

We were all told that the sites could be up to the height of an adult deep in the ground; if anyone fell in, they wouldn't be able to climb out. There are barriers around the area so we don't accidentally fall in the hole. Gas has no smell or scent- but Northern Gas Networks has made their gas smell like rotten egg sandwiches so that if people smell it, they will know to turn off the source or call for someone to help.
"It was very interesting she told us how to stay safe around all of the gas works around our school. I enjoyed listening to the different things she told us."                                                                                                                                        A Year 6 Pupil

" It was a good start to the mornings and to welcome everyone back to Red Rose. Thank you for the safety talk."                                                                                                                                       Mrs Bainbridge

Everybody enjoyed the assembly and listened to the warnings carefully.
