We have exciting news!
One of our governors (Mr Downs) has been helping the School Council to design some marvelous new logo for our school. Several designs have been shown round the school and the classes had to tell the School Council their views.

A busy day at Redrose

Today we had an activity filled day, with loads of fun all around. This Morning the year six and year five and went to a Maths Competition at Hermitage. Also Mrs Bainbridge served her brand new Intergalactical Custard from another galaxy. It was blue!

(It tasted lovely though!)

Year 5 and 6 Japanese art with Pippa Bell

On Thursday the 9th of February, Pippa Bell came into NASA and Discovery class to show the children Japanese art. This was part of two exciting days across the school with children learning about Japanese, Egyptian and polar art - what a great knowledge Pippa had and she loves talking about the art. It left the children and staff looking at art in a different way. She explained the different types of Japanese art - anime, wood block, Shodo and manga plus loads more. She also showed us some famous Japanese including the Great wave by Hokusai.  The children clearly enjoyed it as they listened so well and answered her questions. It was such an exciting morning for everybody and the children are so excited to start their own Japanese art using the types Pippa has shown us.                                               Thank you!

Yr 5 and 6 Hermitage Maths Challenge

On Wednesday 7th 2017,  two teams (one from year five and one from year six) went to the Hermitage to participate in a 'Maths Challenge'. The teams had previously been told that they needed to prepare items for a poster on René Descartes, a famous mathematician, philosopher and scientist from the 16th century.

When the teams got there, they had to complete various challenging maths tasks, relay rounds, puzzles and games as well as having the original poster competition. The material that had been researched had to be organised onto an A2 sheet of paper. Every round had a maximum amount of points which could be awarded to the teams and all of the points were added together to find an overall winner of the competition. Red Rose's year five team came 5th and the year six team came 1st. With this good position, the year 6 team will be going to the final later in the year.

They all enjoyed the day.

"It was fun and very challenging."

Swimming Gala

On Wednesday 8th February 2017, the Red Rose swimming team went to the Freeman Quays swimming pool in Durham to compete against other schools in the district. They didn't think they would come in the top 3, so they hadn't picked anyone to collect the certificate.

Surprisingly, they came 2nd! Someone had to be chosen rapidly to be presented with the runner up certificate.

Well done to the swimmers!

Take off to the Stars

The 'Red Rose Rocket' was recently re-designed (by the art club), since the previous rocket is not very sturdy after three years of heavy use. Our rocket is used for 'Stars in the Rocket', which are one of our ways of awarding students. They can be awarded by teachers or the headteacher during our Friday award assembly, and go towards a trip to Krazy Kingdom for the group (or planet) which has the most stars at the end of the term.

"The new rocket is good and creative. It fits the theme of our school well."

Soon, our new rocket will be in use for our Friday award assembly.

On the 5th and 6th of January, Galaxy,Armstrong and Apollo (Years 3 and 4) went on an educational visit to the Oriental museum. Their topic this term is the Egyptians. On the first day of the visit, Year 3 got on the bus to head off. On the second day of the visits, Year 4 went on their educational visit. They learned all the facts they needed. It was very educational. Everyone really enjoyed the trip. It took the children on a journey around the ages of Ancient Egypt. They saw exhibits of hieroglyphics, mummies, extracts of pottery and Egyptian art. They learned about pharaohs, the sphinx and lots more.

A student said, “The trip was educational and very interesting,”
