1000 Cranes, well nearly 1000 and swans.

Discovery News
This afternoon, we made some origami swans. These are similar to the cranes that a girl called Sadako Sasaki made whilst she was ill following the atomic bomb drop on Hiroshima. Aged 2, Sadako was diagnosed with Leukaemia which made her ill. Sadly, at the age of 11 she died, but not after trying to make 1000 cranes from paper. There is a Japanese legend that says that if you make 1000 cranes then you will be granted 1 wish. We have made 78 swans (easier to make than cranes). They have become a symbol of peace between people. It was interesting to learn about Sadako and discuss whether she was a real symbol of world peace.
